Elimination of Baseball Fields in Section 10 Pleases Parents Who Enjoy Driving

July 2, 2014 by admin

no-new-baseball-fieldsThe July issue of the Front Porch reported that the City of Denver no longer plans to include baseball fields in the section 10 area as originally planned. “There are already soccer fields at Dick’s,” said Deirdre Oss, Senior City Planner. “Do kids really play baseball anymore? I feel like all I see on TV right now is soccer. So, baseball fields seem a little unnecessary, plus they can be expensive to upkeep. Sure, they may be good for the kids, but there’s just no money in baseball fields. You know what there is money in? Property taxes.” Many residents disagree with Oss that kids no longer play baseball, but they do agree that the fields aren’t necessary. “Well, more kids are playing baseball in Stapleton than any other sport, except maybe soccer,” said youth sports director Gabe Hurley. “Northeast Denver does not have many baseball fields, especially more than two at the same venue. This doesn’t cause much of a problem, however, as almost all of the families I know don’t mind driving 30-45 minutes to either the other side of Denver or another city altogether.” Baseball mom Nikki Potter agrees. “We have a 10 year old in a Denver baseball league, and we have to drive all over the place,” says Potter. “But, it’s great because we have the time, a nice vehicle, and it’s a great way to use more gas. Most of the parents I know like having to drive for these reasons and putting multiple baseball fields near Stapleton may alleviate all that enjoyable driving for hundreds and hundreds of future baseball parents.” Oss says that parents shouldn’t be concerned about any new baseball fields going in so they can continue to enjoy their long drives to other fields. “As of now, we are planning to put a couple in near the high school, but honestly, we may not do that either,” said Oss. “On paper, that land looks like it is better suited for residential homes as well.” Oss says the city is doing everything they can to keep Stapleton parents on the road. “We are even considering eliminating sports facilities from the high school and simply leasing other facilities for games. We know that sports aren’t that important to most residents, plus it will give the parents of Northfield High School another reason to drive.” ]]>

Community, Soopers Come to Agreement; They Kill Mosquitoes, We Stop Bitching About Them

July 2, 2014 by admin

spraying for mosquitoesAt the end of last summer, Stapleton residents were hammered by mosquitoes, and the beginning of this summer has been more of the same. Last August, it was so bad you really couldn’t take your kids to the park in fear they would be bitten hundreds of times. Sprays seem ineffective against the millions of swarms of annoying insects. Some say it has to do with the pooling of water in Stapleton, or the standing water at Bluff Lake and Westerly Creek. However, many believe that the City and County of Denver have done a poor job of controlling the population. Hail Damage Pays for Family’s Disney Vacation

July 2, 2014 by admin

hail pays for family vacationIf you live in Stapleton, you have most likely been bombarded by roofers’ fliers, phone calls, and knocks on your door. Sadly, this annoyance is probably the most damage caused by the hail storms in May. Families have to first deal with the roofers coming out, then the insurance companies, and typically have to pay at least a $1,000 deductible. After that, they will have to deal with roofers working on their house for at least a week. The process can be quite painful. [Read more…] about Hail Damage Pays for Family’s Disney Vacation

Forest City Working to Get Gas Pumps at Stapleton Pocket Parks

July 2, 2014 by admin

gas pumps at pocket parksIn yet another twist for Forest City and gas stations in Stapleton, Forest City is now pushing to get gas pumps at all Stapleton pocket parks. “It just makes sense,” says Forest City Spokesperson Janelle Ayers. “These will be Forest City pumps, owned by Forest City, and operated by Forest City. We have all these different companies, 711, Kroger, making money of pumps. Shouldn’t Forest City be getting a taste of that?” [Read more…] about Forest City Working to Get Gas Pumps at Stapleton Pocket Parks

Cool 75 Degree Day Forces Nannies to do Something With Kids Besides Go to Pool

July 2, 2014 by admin

cant go to pool during cold tempsOn Tuesday, temperatures in Stapleton dropped to the mid-70’s. This temporary freeze caused havoc for nannies and stay at home moms all over Stapleton. “I have basically been taking the kids to the pool every day since the summer started,” said nanny Erika Bearbower. “Then, we come home for lunch and video games, or a show, then back to the pool. It is a very simple routine.” However, when the temperatures dropped, the pool was no longer an option. Soopers to Stapleton: “La! La! La! La! We are Not Listening to Residents!”

June 18, 2014 by admin

King Soopers not listening to residentsEver since the announcement that King Soopers would be the anchor store at the Eastbridge Town Center, Stapleton residents have been holding meetings, starting Facebook pages, emailing Forest City and King Soopers, and everything else in between to give feedback or to possibly stop the grocer from moving into Eastbridge. “I have been to the SUN meeting, the Forest City and Kroger meeting, and have held rallies in my backyard,” said resident John Potter. “But every time we have meetings, or give extensive feedback, they never come back with anything that we need. No answers, or no improvements as far as we are concerned.” Potter should have been clued into Forest City and Soopers lack of interest in community feedback from the last community meeting the two companies attended. At one point in the meeting after listening to several residents repeat the same critical comments of King Soopers, King Soopers VP and representative Thad Ortner took the podium. Ortner covered his ears, and started shaking his head side to side while yelling, “La! La! La! La! I am not listening to you!” over and over for about 30 seconds, and then simply sat down and produced an arrogant smirk. Ortner was not available for comment after the meeting or for this article. “I think everyone was shocked,” said meeting attendee Mike Becker. “Not because of what he said. A lot of us know they don’t care about our opinions and are simply going through the motions. What was shocking was how the message was delivered. It was pretty childish and dickish.” Other attendees agreed. “It was just crazy,” said Kamie Olds. “It did shut everyone up, I will say. So, if his goal was to get people to stop ripping on King Soopers and stop repeating themselves, then I guess he did a great job.” Where Ortner’s plan succeeded, it also may have failed. “I can tell you that the community is more enraged and united as ever,” said Potter. “Once word spread how things were handled by the Soopers delegates, hundreds and hundreds of people have since joined our causes through Facebook.” Potter is unsure if this increase of anger and opposition against Soopers will make a difference, but they will continue to fight. “We will fight until the last Soopers brick is placed in its permanent structure. In fact, even after it is built, if we have to picket the place until they go out of business, we will!” An unnamed Soopers source has told The Stapletonion that Soopers remains as dedicated as ever to not listen to members of the Stapleton community. Looks like we have ourselves a little Havana St. standoff. ]]>
