The 26th Ave. Park remains unfinished, so Forest City decided to partner with Denver Waste Management for temporary use of the area. “We have been in discussions with Denver Waste Management for about six months now,” said Forest City spokesperson Janelle Ayers. “We feel this will be a strong relationship for both parties, and we look forward to working with Denver Waste management in the coming years.” Forest City has essentially decided to allow the 26th Ave. Park area to be used as a temporary overload dumping site. “We are always struggling to find holding sites for our overload,” said Waste Management CEO David Steiner. “The location and area is perfect for us,” said Steiner. “We can drop 10 to 15 truckloads there at the site, and come back later to pick up what we dropped. It is a perfect scenario on our end.” Ayers says there aren’t any foreseeable drawbacks to the situation. “The people in that area of Eastbridge are currently looking at Aurora. Now, there will be giant piles of trash. What’s the difference, really?” To 26th Ave. and Eastbridge residents, the difference is massive. “It’s one thing to have an empty weed and rodent-ridden park behind you,” says 26th Ave. resident Jennifer Retzlaff. “But another thing to have a huge trash pile behind your house. I am sure I am missing something, but this seems to be the stupidest thing Forest City has done so far.” Eastbridge resident Bo Clark agrees. “This is unreal,” says Clark. “Can they do this? I am shocked that somehow this made it through the channels to be legal in some way. SUN or the MCA can’t step in? Wow. Just, wow.” Ayers says in the end this is a win for the community. “We are leasing the space out at a considerable profit. We are hoping to use this money to eventually finish the park we promised a decade ago. Of course, there is always a chance those funds could get shifted, but right now, we are earmarking those funds for the 26th Ave. Park completion.” Ayers says the current agreement with Waste Management is for eight years. Overall, Stapleton is a pretty fit community, with running clubs and trails, several CrossFit organizations, a rec center, Orange Theory, among several other ways for residents to keep in shape. If you haven’t been over to the Conservatory Green Neighborhood in Stapleton, it’s really coming together nicely. What originally looked like a hastily thrown together instant neighborhood now appears to be a well-thought out plan, complete with all the perks. Conservatory Green comes with its own Green (Conservatory Green Plaza), easy access to Target, and the trail system is coming in nicely. Add in the High Tech Elementary School which has a tremendous amount of green space and a magnificent play area, you have the makings of possibly the best neighborhood in Denver. Amid concern that tensions over McAuliffe International School admission priorities could escalate into a wider conflict, Park Hill community leaders insisted Monday that their neighborhood’s uranium enrichment program is for peaceful purposes only. “We are not building a nuclear bomb,” said Jon Mason, president of the Greater Park Hill Community Association. “We just want an independent power source in case the Xcel grid goes down for some reason. Like, say, if it gets overloaded with ‘smug’ from all the solar panels in Stapleton.” Experts fear, however, that Park Hill’s nuclear ambitions could trigger an arms race, with Stapleton seeking to build a bomb next, followed perhaps by Lowry, Montclair and Hale. Foreign relations expert Dr. Kyle Trask says he has seen this pattern before. “This is why globally have the mess we have,” says Trask. “India gets nukes, then Pakistan gets them, and before that it was the Soviet Union and China. Eastbridge resident Keith Beatty has long been on the side of those who do not want another King Soopers in the Eastbridge Town Center. He has put signs in his yard, attended meetings, and joined Facebook groups opposing the potential move of King Soopers to the Eastbridge neighborhood. “I have been hoping for an alternative to a major chain grocer,” said Beatty. “I feel like there are several other local-type grocers or Whole Foods-types which would be supported in that location. Scott Morgan knew his time traveling invention would forever change the course of his life, and possibly the course of humanity. “This was something I had been working on for over twenty years,” said the 45 year old Morgan, a physics major from Stanford. “To finally see things come together, is just incredible to me. There were days I didn’t think it was going to happen, but here we are.” Where Morgan ended up was the Stapleton neighborhood in Denver, Colorado in 2015. “I wanted to see what things were like thirty years from my present day, 1985,” said Morgan. “I live in Denver, and I wanted to head out to the airport first thing to see the massive differences in airplane technology. According to a recent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the Stapleton Swap Facebook group is as addictive as taking the street drug methamphetamine, or meth. “What we found in our study was that very similar parts of the brain were impacted by both,” said Dr. Greg Artz. “They essentially act as euphoriants, causing great highs, but when people come down it can be severe. This is what gives both their addictive traits. Once you come down, you again are looking for that high, so you keep coming back. In these cases, either to crystal meth or Stapleton Swap.” Artz says the physical and psychological side effects of Swap and meth are very similar. “On the physical front, both can cause loss of appetite, increased sweating, blurred vision, and a pale appearance,” said Artz. “Luckily, for Swap users, teeth go completed unaffected, unlike meth which can have devastating effects on teeth.” Artz continues to mention the psychological effects of both. “Increased concentration, insomnia, wakefulness, anxiety, and repetitive and obsessive behaviors are all behaviors observed in both Swap and Meth users.” Artz says meth should never be done recreationally, but Swap can be a positive experience if you are being monitored by a support group. “You need to have family and friends around, and maybe even a doctor, to let you know when your “swapping” is becoming a problem,” said Artz. “If you are alone and asking yourself if your “swapping” is a problem, you’re already too late.” The culture of Swap is also very similar to the drug culture. There are all sorts of different kinds of users. There are those who are mostly buyers, and those who are mostly sellers (pushers). There are also swap wars, the same as there are drug wars. Some swappers even believe they have rights to certain territories, or neighborhoods within Stapleton. “It’s pretty messed up,” says former swapper Kristi Clark. “I was lucky enough to get out of it when I did. I know for some of my old friends, they are way into the culture now, and I don’t know if I will ever get them back. It’s just so sad.” Artz says that the best way to not become an addict is to “not get involved in the first place. Once you are hooked, they have you. Whether it’s meth or Swap.
