Five years ago, Grant Campbell wanted to get involved in a grass roots campaign to get other African Americans in Stapleton motivated to support underdog candidate Barack Obama. It was a huge undertaking, and convincing others to join his “Black Stapletonians for Obama” group would not be easy. “I knew I had an uphill battle,” said Campbell. “There were about 1000 African Americans in our community, and for obvious reasons, most were very pro-McCain. Getting them to support Obama was not as easy as dropping a flier on a doorstep, or making a couple of phone calls.” By the time of the 2008 election, with persistence and hard work, Campbell had over 200 members in his group.
“It wasn’t easy,” said Campbell. “We had a lot of knock down-drag out fights to convince African Americans that Obama would be a good President for them. Sure, it took a lot of time, but the satisfaction of knowing we were doing something for our future President and our country felt good.” Fast forward five years later, and Campbell’s group now has over 600 members. “We are extremely proud of how far we have come. Of course, the goal is always to get the remaining 600 or so members to join our group, but one member at a time is fine with us.”
Many African American Stapletonians are standing steadfast in their support for Romney. “He has a five point plan,” said African American resident Brittni Morris. “It reminds me of four minute abs. Not totally sure what the five points are, but I love the simplicity of it, and I assume it will be just as effective as the four minute abs program.” Convincing African American Stapletonians to go out of their comfort zone and vote for Obama has been just as challenging as expected. “We are asking these people to do something they have never considered,” said Campbell. “Of course, we don’t expect to change their minds with a handshake. We have to go into the nitty gritty of the Romney and Obama plans and explain why Obama’s is good for them, and Romney’s is not.”
“Colorado being a swing state makes our jobs even more exciting,” said Campbell. “We are as motivated as ever to keep Obama in the White house. We are doing everything we can to attract more members.” Those interested in joining “Black Stapletonians for Obama” can go to BlackStapletonians4Obama.org]]>
Stapleton Halloween Parades Turn Political
The Stapleton Halloween parades are usually a great way for residents to see all of their neighbors kids’ costumes and let their kid start getting excited for Halloween. This year, the normally fun parade became extremely political. “At least half of the kids were holding political signs, and many with no costume at all,” said local resident Nate Christin. “There were a lot of parents who simply said their kids were going as a Romney or Obama supporter. Hell, I had kids asking me who I am voting for.”

Stapletonians take Advantage of Denver County Jail’s Work Release Program
Last Tuesday, the Denver County Jail had a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the newly renovated jail. That is not the only thing that was renovated, however. The Denver County Jail also restructured some of its policies in regards to its work release program. “We are doing essentially what the Warden did in Shawshank Redemption, but doing it legally,” said Denver County Sherriff Elias Diggins. “We try to get business in areas such as yard work, painting, auto mechanics, etc. and we compete with other businesses in the private sector.”

Tires Plus Celebrates Screwing of 10,000th Stapleton Customer
It took ten years and a lot of hard work, but the Stapleton Tires Plus finally got there: screwing over its 10,000th customer. “We are really proud of what we were able to accomplish, in really what is a short time,” said regional Tires Plus manager Chris Fix. “Most companies aren’t able to screw over 5,000 customers in 10 years, we were able to double that.” Fix points out that there are several challenges in getting to that number.

Really Private Couple Realizes Stapleton “Probably Not a Good Fit”
Nathan and Emily Hoffert moved to Stapleton for the same reasons many people do. They liked the idea of still living in Denver, but having a safe environment with good schools for their kids. For the most part, they have enjoyed the experience, and they have met new friends, and their children have enjoyed going to the pools and meeting lots of friends. But recently, the Hofferts put their home up for sale and began looking for homes elsewhere.
“We certainly love Stapleton and most of the people here, but why does everyone have to know everything we are doing,” complains Emily. “We had people from three blocks away come over and tell us they were going to be sad to see us go. This is before we even had a for sale sign in our yard. We can’t have friends over without neighbors coming over and joining without being invited.”
