City of Denver Looking for Ideas for “Sound Art” in New Town Center

April 10, 2017 by Staff Writer

Later this spring, the newest Stapleton art project is being released in the Eastbridge Town Center. The new project is considered “Sound art” (that’s apparently a real thing). The common area will have three talking parking meters that will be activated by sensors and speakers, and are meant to be surprise walkers as well as provide some humor. “It is going to be a really fun project,” said artist Rose McAllister. “I have done several projects similar to this, but I think this is going to really stand out.” The project won’t be completed until late spring or early summer, and the City of Denver and the artist are looking for feedback from Stapleton residents on what they think the meters should say. “We absolutely want input from the community,” said McAllister. “This is community art, and the enjoyment of the people hearing it is incredibly important to us.” The City of Denver and McAllister has turned to the Stapletonion to reach out to community members to get feedback and then provide that feedback to the necessary parties. We are looking for what people feel the meters should say. Some examples include:

  • “Just a guess, but are you upper-middle income?”
  • “Hey, sorry this took so long. Would a little ice cream make you feel better?”
  • “Skate your butts on home kids, or I’ll call your parents!”
  • “If you’re coming from Soopers, better hurry before those vegetables go bad.”
  • “Sorry. No liquor store.”
  • “Did you know that including the gas station here, there are four gas stations within roughly a two mile radius?”
  • “Wow! Are you a mom or a model? Or both?”
  • “Leave now! This is a ‘no Auroran’ zone! (in robot voice)”

Please send your suggestions to stapletonion@gmail.com and we will publish the best suggestions and pass them on to the interested parties. The City of Denver thanks you for your help.
