Major awards keep coming for the northeastern community in Denver. The Nature Conservancy announced this week that they are awarding Stapleton’s Historic 35th Ave. Block with the prestigious “Arbor-o-rific Award”. Previous award winners include Sequoia National Forest, the Amazon rain forest and obviously, Thornton.
“There are literally one dozen trees in the neighborhood that are over 12 feet tall, with six or seven branches and a trunk diameter of 4 inches,” raved Chris Strano, Nature Conservancy Junior Vice President of Greater Wyoming and Western Kansas. “The amount of biodiversity rivals some of the great old hardwood growths of pre-colonial New England. Sometimes a crabapple tree will be planted right next to a blue spruce. The HGTV Green Home sports four types of five-foot trees. The amount of large trees in the area has even attracted the neighborhood’s first squirrel,” Strano continued.
Builders have been planting three to four trees with each new house in the neighborhood and have been averaging 67 new plantings per day. At this voracious pace, Stapleton is primed to win other conservancy awards for many years to come. In related news, the 35th Avenue block captain has arranged for the squirrel to be euthanized.]]>
