View of Jail Beautiful—Especially at Night

Residents in the North Central Park neighborhood get a nice view of the Denver County Jail on Havana. On a clear day, one can easily see the watch tower, the glistening barbed wire around the fence, and even the female inmates doing the lawn and other yard work. “I don’t mind it at all,” said resident Jeff Jones. “When lit up, it can be really pretty. They could do some cool things with Christmas lights around the holidays, but other than that, I am totally fine with it.”
Some residents are seeing other benefits as well. “We tell our kids that it is a dungeon where the evil wizard lives,” explained Lisa Stone. “If they don’t eat their dinner, well, we are taking them over there for the night.” Prison guard Gary Hodges says that residents have nothing to fear regarding a breakout. “Is it possible some of the prisoners could escape? Certainly. But we made sure to put the appropriate signage up on Havana and MLK to help direct them back to Aurora.” Overall, it appears that the jail and this middle class community are coexisting very well.
